Evidently I am psychic. WTF?

I am a perfectly rational human being that scoffs at ghost stories and tales of alien abductions.  And yet, strangely, I had the weirdest supernatural experience.  I was brushing my teeth when I suddenly had a bad feeling about my grandfather.  I felt very worried and strangely sad as well.  So later on, I call him and ask how he's doing.

He's not doing so well, as it turns out.  He's very lonely and sick, and can barely get around his apartment.  I talk to him about college and such and promise to visit as soon as I can.  I feel very depressed afterward, but feel better for having called him.

Then my mom (his daughter) calls me and says it turns out he hadn't been answering his calls for days before I called him. Then he calls her and tells her to bring the family over to him this summer.  It turns out he feels that he's reaching the end and wants to see us all.  He didn't want to ask though and burden us since he's a bit of stoic. Then when I called him, he decided to ask anyway.

I'm really worried about him now.  I hope I can see him, and I really really hope it isn't just to say goodbye.  He's such a great person!  I don't want to see him go.  It's selfish, I know.  He's lived a good life, but... :(

Disney is so cute when it's sheepish!

Just saw Princess and the Frog.  Wonderful movie!  The ending was a little too saccharine on my very cynical movie goer's taste buds, but hey it's Disney!  Or rather, Disney done right. Good story, beautiful visuals, developed characters...  The messages were heavy-handed, but they were very nice messages so I won't complain too much.

Am I the only one who thinks that Disney is going back to its age-old themes and saying, "Hey, you know all that stuff we told you when you were kids and then found out life wasn't exactly like that: Dreams come true if you wish upon a star, Prince Charming will come and sweep you off your feet, you'll live happily ever after if you believe, etc?  Well...we were kind of wrong to tell you that and give you unrealistic expectations about life. So we're now going to amend our former statements.  Dreams come true...if you work hard but don't lose sight of what's important.  Prince Charming might need a little work, but true love does exist if you spend time and get to know and appreciate each other.  Oh and living happily ever after...it happens, if you go through magical adventures and fight evil villains and all that jazz!"

Enchanted was very similar in its approach on the Disney Princess genre, and just as heavy-handed in delivering its message.  I didn't like it as much, but I liked Tiana much more as the heroine than Giselle!  And the neat dumping and consequential pairing of Giselle and Robert's respective love interests left something of a bad taste in my mouth.

Would I be a total dork if I said that Tiana reminded me a lot of Nami from One Piece? Obsessed with getting money and making their dreams come true? Rather abrasive about it as well, but with a good heart and admirable inner strength? ;)

All in all, a wonderful movie and without giving too much away, I absolutely loved the incorporation of Disney's classic motif of the second star to the right into the story!  It was lovely and strangely touching at the same time! Ah, Evangeline and Raymond...you two are the real love that bound Princess and the Frog together! :)

*edit*

Ooh, before I forget: I love the parallels and contrast between Dr. Facilier (the villain) and Tiana (the heroine).  Both seem to come from the same place and have similar levels of ambition.  They're both black in 1920's New Orleans, which naturally means that they're disadvantaged and are on the bottom rung of society.  Facilier resents that: you can see the hate and spite in his eyes when he sees Charlotte's rich father and his spitting out, "You see them driving by in their cars, those fat cats, don't even notice you!" or something like that to Larry, the prince's servant whom he's manipulating at the time.  You know he isn't just talking about Larry!  Tiana also knows this: her father had to work to the bone trying to get their restaurant started that never happened.  She had to have it shoved in her face whenever she visited her friend Charlotte, who's spoiled by her rich and influential father.  Yet she never shows any jealousy to Charlotte and just pushes herself to work harder to fulfill her dreams.  I think it's just pointing out how much of a difference family can make: how Tiana was just raised by good people that taught her good values to live by rather than trying to take the easy way out.  And tell me if Facilier's constant getting himself in debt with his "friends on the Other Side" didn't remind you of someone getting on the wrong side of the law!  And Disney was actually being subtle about the racism: it's never directly addressed except when Tiana's outbid and the realtors made a reference to her "background" with an obvious jibe at her race.  Wow, just wow.  Talk about Fridge Brilliance!

Life is good

There are some days like this. Where your breath condenses in saturated air. Where your legs pound the wet pavement. Where rain stings your cheeks as you gasp for breath. Life churns around you with everyone in a frenzy while you feel like you're floating. Days where you just want to say: Thank God. Thank God I am alive.
